OVERGAAUW WINE ESTATE - STELLENBOSCH, SOUTH AFRICA
More than a century old, this historic fourth-generation-owned Stellenbosch wine estate is owned and operated by one of the "first families of Cape wine." While Overgaauw is synonymous with innovation – most recently reflected in the release of top-quality new vintages across the Overgaauw wine range – the team is careful not to allow modernization to detract from their rich legacy.
Fourth-generation winemaker David Van Velden’s youthful energy and passion and an enviable legacy of a century of winemaking and excellent Stellenbosch Kloof terroir served him exceedingly well when he took over the reins at Overgaauw in 2007. “Experience and some school fees helped me identify a clear view of what I would like to achieve. First and foremost is a continuous focus on expressing a sense of place in all our wines and increasing the purity and cleanliness of fruit in our wines across the range.”

The Shepherd’s Cottage at Overgaauw was originally built in the late 1700s to house the local shepherd. It’s a quaint cottage with thick, old whitewashed walls and small windows protected by green shutters, each with a heart carved out in its centre. For the last two generations, the newlywed Van Velden children have had the privilege of calling this their home for the first few years of their married life. These wines celebrate the warmth, commitment and love shared in this humble home.
It generously offers a mélange of tropical aromas, lime zest and green apple, with a touch of ‘Overgaauw Terroir’ minerality. The aromas follow through onto a well-balanced vibrant palate that delivers an elegant, refreshing, crisp finish and a lingering aftertaste.

This wine is a 60/40 blend, where the minimal use of oak allows the true character of the cultivars to come to the fore. The Cabernet Sauvignon offers structure combined with rich blackberry flavours, while the Merlot adds ripe, juicy black cherry truffle flavours with hints of violets. It’s a voluptuous, generous and smooth wine with fine ripe tannins designed for immediate enjoyment and up to 5 years ageing.

David Senior and Braam van Velden were the first South Africans to plant the Portuguese variety Touriga Nacional. It was planted to add more complexity to their vintage-style port wine which they were already producing from 5 Portuguese varieties planted on the estate. In the 1970s, they produced a popular dry red wine called Overtinto, which was made from 5 Portuguese varieties. The popularity of this wine inspired the creation of the Touriga Nacional.
A fruit-driven wine with aromas and flavours of plums, mulberries, rich ripe raspberries and spice. Succulent on the palate with fine tannins that offer a pleasant grip on the finish, complementing the lengthy fruit and mineral-driven aftertaste. Will benefit by ageing up to 5 years, but is ready to enjoy now.

Bordeaux Blend of Cabernet Sauvignon 53%, Merlot 40%, Cabernet Franc 7% (Varies with each vintage)
Overgaauw was an early champion of a Bordeaux-style blend. In 1979, a Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot/Cinsaut blend named Tria Corda was launched. Then in 1982, a more classic approach was taken by replacing the Cinsaut with Cabernet Franc. These 3 classic Bordeaux varietals have remained the components ever since. Tria Corda is a Latin translation for 3 hearts and refers to these 3 varietals that form the heart of the Overgaauw Wine Estate’s unique terroir.
Its seductively perfumed nose offers generous layers of cassis, raspberry, cedar and a touch of spice and minerals. The nose follows through onto a silky, well-balanced palate that delivers fine ripe tannins and a long, concentrated finish – the perfect foil for the wine’s brilliant fruit.
